The Blockade Runner Beach Resort won the 2000 Worrell 1000 sailboat race. Randy Smyth and Matt Struble sailed the Wrightsville Beach boat to the finish at Virginia Beach on Saturday, May 20. The Worrell 1000 is sailing version of "Survivor" and the "tribal counsel" is held by Mother Nature. It is a rugged, one-of-a-kind sailboat race that pits some of the world's best catamaran sailors against one another and the elements for almost two weeks and 1,000 grueling miles of open ocean. The Worrell1000 begins on Monday, May 6 in South Beach and finishes on Saturday, May 19 in Virginia Beach. One of the 12 stops is Wrightsville Beach on Tuesday, May 15 in front of the Blockade Runner.
