LUMINA DAZE at the
Blockade Runner |
Lumina Daze Coming August 10, 2003
The Wrightsville Beach Museum of History will sponsor the 10th annual
Lumina Daze on Sunday, August 10, from 5pm until 10pm at the Blockade Runner
Resort, 275 Waynick Blvd., Wrightsville Beach, NC.
Lumina Daze is a celebration of the 1930’s era of
Wrightsville Beach, remembering the heyday of Lumina Pavilion.
Activities this year run the gamut from old-time games, barbershop
singing, and face painting. The
hotel’s Robert E. Lee Ballroom will set the stage for the Wilmington Big Band,
Cape Fear Chordsmen, Harmony Belles and the Wilmington Dance Studio Ballroom
Dancers. This year’s silent
auction will feature a wide assortment of fine
art, Adirondack Chairs painted by local artists
(see below), services and specialties from local businesses.
Adirondack Chair by Cynthia Davis.
Games for the children, popular during the 1930’s, will include sack races on
the beach, three-legged race, ring toss and cakewalks on the half hour.
Area churches will provide the cakes for this year’s event.
Perhaps the most popular activity is the showing of an old film on the beach
at dusk, just as movies were shown years ago at Lumina.
This year, Lumina Daze presents “Murder at the Vanities,” with Carl
Brisson, Jack Oakie and Kittie Carlisle. The
1934 black and white Paramount picture was directed by Mitchell Leisen. Duke Ellington and his Orchestra provide the music for the
film.
Tickets are $8.00 in advance and $10.00 at the door.
Proceeds benefit the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History.
